Covering the bases

LEADING OFF: CF Gorkys Hernandez struck out looking to end the top of the third Wednesday. He argued the call and walked out to center with what manager Matt Walbeck deemed an "unacceptable" attitude. After warming up in the middle of the inning, Hernandez threw a ball over the right-field fence. Walbeck then took him out of the game. Walbeck felt Hernandez's attitude "was not going to work." He added: "We all make mistakes, and he handled it well afterward. He and I had a nice conversation."

SAFE AT FIRST: Taking out Hernandez was not so simple, as Walbeck had a number of additional moves to make because of it. Jamie Romak took Hernandez's place in the lineup. Jose Tabata moved from right to replace Hernandez in center. Jonel Pacheco moved from left to right to fill in for Tabata and lastly, Jason Delaney moved from first to left so Romak could play first.

STEALING SECOND: C Steve Lerud left the game with an unknown injury in the eighth inning after his infield single. Milver Reyes replaced Lerud on the bases and for the last two innings.

ROUNDING THIRD: SS Brian Friday was back in the lineup after not starting the previous two games because of a bum ankle. Friday went 1-for-5 with a single in the seventh.

HEADING HOME: Delaney's RBI single and two-run homer on Wednesday gave him 35 RBIs on the season as he took the team lead.
