Tuesday night was a memorable one at Blair County Ballpark for many reasons.

Lilly Conrad Chiropractic/American Legion and Sheetz squared off in a regular season Altoona Greater City League game at the ballpark.

The Blair County region was blessed with some of the most beautiful weather the area has had this year, and as a result, the ballpark was sun-splashed.

But the most important one by far was the community coming together as one to benefit the Scott Garlick Memorial Scholarship Fund.

"It was an uplifting night," Sheetz manager Dave Zeak said. "We played a good team on a good night for a wonderful cause."

Earlier this year, Zeak and Altoona Curve general manager Rob Egan talked about scheduling a City League game at BCB, but Zeak's focus quickly changed from scheduling a normal regular season game to a game that would benefit Garlick, the adolescent who was killed in April while he was working at a Subway in Altoona.

On Tuesday, Zeak and Egan's plans came to fruition, and the City League did its part in helping the Garlick family heal.

"We just hope this will help the Garlick family heal from such a tragedy," Zeak said. "Tonight was all about the community coming together and putting our arms around each other, in an effort to help the Garlicks."

Egan could only allow the City League to play one game at BCB this season, but he insured there would be multiple games in 2010.

"Rob promised multiple games next season," Zeak said. "This was a good step forward."

Zeak hopes the City league can grow from this experience.

"I think this was a positive experience for the league, because we had a lot of people in attendance who would not normally attend our games," Zeak said.

Even though the evening was all dedicated to Scott Garlick and his family, the game was also the first opportunity for most of the players involved to play in a professional stadium. Everyone involved was truly grateful for the opportunity.

"It was a neat experience," Lilly player/manager Sean Davison said. "I want to thank the Altoona Curve, Rob Egan and Dave Zeak for making this happen. It was a positive experience, and it was for a good cause."

Lilly pitcher Ernie Peterman played minor league ball, so he played in some stadiums like BCB. But even for him, it was a treat.

"When you get to play on a field like this, it gets the competitive juices flowing again," Peterman said.

Although the game itself took a backseat to the night's festivities, the game was very good. Lilly got the best of Sheetz, 7-3.

In the bottom of the first inning, Matt Hershey drove in a run on a single, and Justin Dunio hit a two-out, two-run single to right to plate two. As a result, Sheetz jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Zeak was very pleased with his team's first-inning success.

"I felt pretty good after we plated those three runs," Zeak said. "But I knew that Lilly would scratch and claw the rest of the game."

Lilly went on to score seven unanswered runs, and Peterman, who turned 40 Tuesday, pitched two innings in relief and struck out five to earn the win.

"At this point, I'm just glad that I can still go out there and compete," Peterman said.

Lilly sits on top of the City league standings with a 9-1 record.

Sheetz fell to 3-6.
